The secret to writing a good press release is to make your release 'newsworthy'. The more like news your release sounds the higher chance that your release will be picked up by major news outlets.
First Make Sure to have a catchy headline that will draw your reader to read your press release. Do not make the headline excessively wordy. The best headlines give the reader enough information to know what its about but not enough information so that they want to read more.
Next be sure to include a sub-headline. A sub-headline is a two sentence summary of your release. It highlights the major points and will let a news editor know what your release is about.
Now comes the body of your press release. Be sure to start it out with the city that the release is being sent from along with the date. Make sure that your opening sentence is powerful and covers all of your 'W's' (who, what, where, why, when, and how).
A good press release is direct, to the point, and is not excessively long. Also at the end of every press release you should include an "About Your Company" profile. This brief section is a short one to two paragraph profile on your company so that both readers and editors alike can have a background on your company.
